Property Tax FAQ

Over 2024 and 2025, the Town of Medford underwent a town-wide property tax re-evaluation. This evaluation was conducted by Maine Assessment & Appraisal Services, Inc. Since new Property Tax bills have been committed, there have been a number of common questions, which we have listed below:
Q: I don’t agree with my valuation being so high; can I call the assessing company to fix it?

A: At this point, our contract with Maine Assessing and Appraisal has ended. They performed their revaluation, sent 706-A notices to all property owners with an updated valuation and estimate of their taxes and a deadline for revisions, which has expired.

From here, all inquiries will be handled by the Town of Medford and their Assessors. The valuations are in line with State standards, but if there are any errors with what is on your property, we will be happy to help fix them via the abatement process (see below).

Q: Why is my new valuation so high?

A: Medford had not done a town-wide revaluation in over 20 years. As a result, many of our property values were considerably below fair market value, and the State of Maine was imposing penalties on our town for undervaluing our properties. The town-wide revaluation brought us up to the current State standard for all properties. A professional assessing company was hired specifically to make sure that the revaluation was done to State standards and completely impartially.

Q:What does this part of my building card mean?

A: Tax cards can be confusing! If there is any part of your building card that you do not understand, feel free to give us a call or stop in during office hours and we’ll be happy to explain it to you.

Q: This part of my building card is wrong! What can I do to fix it?

A: All property owners have 185 days after tax commitment to apply for an Abatement. Property taxes were committed on November 17th 2025, so you have until May 21st, 2026 to apply for an abatement. Please note that Abatements only apply to actual mistakes on your property (e.g. a garage that was torn down is still listed, a basement is listed as finished when it is actually unfinished)

Q: I still have more questions!
A: You can always email questions to the town office via info@townofmedfordmaine.com. You can also call the office Tuesday and Wednesday from 9AM-11AM and Thursday from 5PM-7PM at (207)732-4079
